A Label You Should Know About: Rowdy Records

Music Industry professionals Dallas Austin and L.A. Reid are co-owners of the record label Rowdy Records, founded in 1992.

Unfamaliar with the names? Dallas Austin is mostly known for writing and producing some stars biggest hits, including Monica, Da King & I and TLC. L. A. Reid was also running LaFace Records concurrently until he left Rowdy Records in 1993. At that point, Austin was running the label entirely by himself.

Rowdy Records has a rocky history. Initially distributed through Arista Records, upon the then 14-year-old Monica's album Miss Thang gave the label it's largest success, that ended up being it's only success for a long while. Creative differences caused them to sever their relationship with Arista, with whom Monica stayed signed with.

Fast forward to Rowdy losing a major distributor, Austin's consistent sought-after likeness as a producer, and him stepping down as CEO as a result, the label become defunct in 1998...

...that is until it was reactivated by Austin in order to sign a young hip-hop group from Decatur, Georgia called Da BackWudz in 2005. Rowdy has since taken up distribution with Motown Records! We love to see it! 🙌🏾
